Home Cleaning Tips
1. Use Microfiber Cloths
Microfiber cloths are much more effective than using paper towels and sponges. Microfiber is also machine washable and dries fairly quickly, which means that you have fewer germs to worry about. That’s why most cleaning professionals have switched to microfiber. I love using them for dusting too.
2. DIY Multi-purpose Cleaner
You can get different household cleaners that only have one or two cleaning purposes. Or make your multi-purpose cleaner. DIY cleaner is perfect if you are on a budget, or run out of your favorite cleaning products. Just combine one cup of distilled water with one cup of this type of white distilled vinegar in a spray bottle (You can see how I label them with this DIY spray bottle labels tutorial) and shake it up. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oils or lemon juice to the DIY cleaner. (essential oils for wood surfaces are lemon) Doing this will provide your cleaner with the right fragrant touch.
My favorite DIY cleaner that is pet and kid-friendly is Force of Nature Multi-Purpose Cleaner (starter kit). Right now Get 40% off cleaning bundles + FS with code: START40! (valid to 3/31/24)
3. No More Feather Dusters!
For those of you who happen to own a feather duster, it’s way past time for you to part ways with it. Why toss the feather duster? All feather dusters do is move dust around and don’t actually pick everything up. And if you have a cat they might destroy the feather duster like mine did! Using a microfiber cloth vs. a feather duster is the way to go.
4. Hello, Mr. Clean Magic Erasers
The Mr. Clean magic erasers work like magic and are perfect for making cleaning easier! They can easily remove tough stains on most surfaces, including tile, laminate, and wood. Even dirty sinks, toilets, and bathtubs are no match for these amazing erasers. They are great for getting off crayon marks and other scuffs kids make too. Honestly, these are perfect for removing those crayons and felt pen marks. For times when the kids color on the walls! I also like to use them for cleaning tough spots on the stovetop…
5. DeClutter The Home
Clutter makes it harder to clean. Having to move stuff to clean can be frustrating. When you don’t put the clutter away the home can still look messy. (when you have stuff lying around everywhere). Decluttering your entire home is no small task. Tackle the job one room at a time. Pick a room or two and get three boxes (or use laundry baskets). One for donations, one for putting clutter back where it belongs, and one for tossing anything broken, damaged, or unfixable. Start with rooms that visitors will notice. Start with the living room, kitchen, and bathrooms. Continue to the other rooms in the home.

6 How-To Clean the Build-Up in Your Humidifier
Notice the gunk that’s building up in your humidifier? Instead of ignoring it, use undiluted white vinegar to clean it. That way your family isn’t breathing in mold and other microbes that are capable of getting them sick. Swish two cups of vinegar around in your humidifier. Then allow it to sit for about 15 minutes (or more) and use a brush to scrub where needed.
7. Sanitize Your Kitchen Sink
Did you realize that your kitchen sink has lots of germs and bacteria in it? That’s not good! For those of you with stainless steel sinks, we recommend creating a powerful sanitizing paste using 8 ounces of baking soda and lime juice. After it’s been applied, go ahead and use a sponge to scrub it squeaky clean. It’s a good idea to do this at least once a week. There are also other products you can use such as barkeep keepers friend. Grab our Kitchen Cleaning Checklist with cleaning tips for the kitchen and resources.
I have a porcelain sink and use spray bleach cleaner to get it sanitized. Spray it on, and let it sit for 15 minutes. Scrub hard-to-clean areas and rinse the sink with water. The results are amazing. I only do this as needed and be sure not to wear your good clothes (bleach cleaners can stain them).
8. Keep Up With the Oven
Are you guilty of neglecting to clean the oven? Don’t allow oven spills and stains to overwhelm you. It is a lot harder to get food off once it’s been stuck there for a while. Never clean a spill in your oven when it’s still hot, but you can place a dish filled with water in the oven while it’s on and leave it in there for 20 minutes. Then turn off the oven, allow it to cool and you’ll be amazed at how much easier food gunk comes off. Also, refer to the oven instruction manual you received when you purchased the oven for proper cleaning instructions. Or look it up online.

9. How To Clean Lime Build-Up in Your Shower
Lime build-up in the bathroom can be difficult to clean, especially if you’ve let it go for too long. Save yourself the hassle by wiping down the walls and shower door with a squeegee every time you shower. It will only take 15 to 20 seconds of your time and without the headache. But if you have mineral buildup already, you can use white vinegar and a bit of elbow grease to get them sparkling. Note, that this isn’t always the case. When I lived in an area where the water had extreme amounts of lime and iron in the water. Getting a special cleaner for tackling lime build-up was the way to go! Vinegar is good for mild cases. For tougher lime build-up get this product for cleaning Lime build-up. Note: make sure to read labels to make sure it is compatible with your tub/shower surface.
10. Clean Air Vents Often
We like to tackle our air vents at the beginning of winter and before we run the air conditioner at the end of each summer (at a minimum). If you can’t remember the last time you cleaned your air vents, now’s a better time than any. This will reduce the dust circulating in your home and from air becoming blocked. All you need to use is your vacuum with a soft brush tool to remove the dust. Should that not be enough, soak a rag in whatever cleaning agent you have available and wrap it around a butter knife to handle the vents. Don’t forget to replace the air vent filters. Typically we like to do this before we run the heater for the first time in the fall/winter. And before we run the air conditioner in the summer.
11. Freshen Up Your Living Room Furniture
Use baking soda to help minimize odors and remove tough stains on couches and other furniture that has fabric (test a small section in the back first). Clean off the surface and then sprinkle the area that needs to be cleaned with baking soda. Allow it to sit for up to a half-hour and then vacuum up the debris while using the brush tool attachment. I have leather couches and this set of leather cleaner and leather conditioners gave our furniture amazing results. Or use a product like Febreze Fabric Spray and Odor Fighter. Once your living room is freshened up you can read this post, How to organize the living room.
12. Make Glass Sparkle Use Vinegar to Clean Cloudy Glasses (And Glass Surfaces)
Cloudy glass dishes, mirrors, and windows can easily come clean again. Use just a bit of white vinegar and a paper towel or this multi-purpose cleaner. Now you don’t have to be embarrassed when your guests are holding their glass up to the light. No more streaks on mirrors or windows either. For windows and mirrors use newspaper or a microfiber towel.
13. Deep Clean Your Floors
Make your carpeted floors look like a million bucks again by deep cleaning them at least once this year, especially if you have pets or children. If you want the job done right, you’ll have to move all your furniture. You have the option of renting a machine or investing in one (like this deep cleaning floor cleaning machine) or (a versatile compact cleaning machine like this) that you can call your own. For those of you with hardwood floors, use a microfiber mop to scrub them thoroughly.
Daily Upkeep and Cleaning of Living Room Floors
I use Bona Cleaner or Force of Nature on my wood laminate floors and tile floors with a reusable floor mop like this or a Swiffer Sweeper 2 in 1 floor mop. And I like to use these, reusable cotton mop pads. If you have hardwood floors get Bona Hardwood Cleaner.
14. Simply Put, Multitasking Gets the Job Done
Most anyone, especially moms (and dads) can agree that we feel that there isn’t enough time in the day to get everything accomplished, especially when it comes to cleaning. So, use your multitasking skills to knock out two jobs at once. As you’re waiting for water to boil when you’re cooking, sweep the floor or scrub down the counters. When you’re in the shower, feel free to clean your shower and the shower walls. Another great product is Simple Green for cleaning a variety of things in the home or car.
15. Start a Cleaning Routine!
It’s never too late to start a cleaning routine or come up with a better cleaning routine! Coming up with a consistent cleaning routine that you do regularly will keep you from becoming overwhelmed. It will also help you become more efficient in how you clean. Clean from top to bottom, saving the floors for last. Most professional cleaners start in rooms like the living room and bedroom, then move on to the kitchen and bathrooms.
Use these 15 cleaning tips that will help keep your home much cleaner. If you do most of them regularly, it will take you far less time and with less headache. I hope you enjoy the tips and using the steps to make your place clean.
