  1. Mixing Bowls (stainless steel) (stainless steel with copper finish) (glass mixing bowls)
  2. Measuring Cups (Set) Owning a set is worth it. You won’t have to keep rewashing to measure out dry or wet ingredients, as much. Or, at least own a 2 cup measuring cup.
  3. Measuring spoons
  4. Pastry Cutter
  5. Rolling Pin (adjustable) (traditional)
  6. Non-slip Silicone Pastry Mat Extra Large with Measurements
  7. Classic Pie Pan (in 5 colors) (metal pie pan) (ceramic pie plate) (cast iron pie pan)
  8. Pie Weights
  9. Pastry Brush
  10. Bench Scraper
  11. Pastry Wheel (or) Pizza Wheel

When picking the best mixing bowls for baking or making pies, you want a set of bowls that will last you and be easy to use. I own both glass and stainless bowls. I use both. But, as I get older my hands are weaker from overuse from a job I had.

If you suffer from repetitious motion, carpal tunnel, or arthritis. Or will be baking with kids, you might like to invest in stainless steel mixing bowls, they are lighter and durable (Example: if you drop them they will not break like glass bowls often do).

Tips for rolling out pie dough

For baking pies, a good rolling pin is a must and a non-slip mat with measurements helps to make the perfect size pie crust a breeze! My favorite rolling pin is this French rolling pin. (used in combination with the mat for measuring the size of the pie crust.

The key to rolling your dough is making the perfect pie dough (see resources below for making the perfect pie dough) we love an all-butter dough. Do you? Then spread flour over your rolling pin and surface prior to rolling out your pastry dough, and adding a little flour over the top of the dough you are rolling out.

Another must-have is a pie dish, pie plate, or pie pan see recommendations above (the one shown comes in so many colors) and a pastry brush. Most pastry dough calls for the dough to have an egg wash or sometimes melted butter brushed over the top of the crust.

Must-haves for making apple pies

If you are making apple pies these are a few additional pie baking tools for pies that you might like to own. They come in handy and make peeling the apples go quicker…

  1. Apple Corer
  2. Apple Peeler with Suction Cup Base (heavy-duty)
  3. Or a good hand peeler like this KitchenAid peeler or this peeler.
  4. Lemon Squeezer
  5. Pocket Pie Crimper is good to own if you are making hand pies.

Anytime you are baking

It’s handy to own an apron with an adjustable neck and center pocket to keep your clothes clean while making pies and baking. Or grab a pinafore styled apron. What type of apron do you prefer when baking?

Blind Baking

When you are ready to bake the dough, without the filling inside it’s called blind baking. You prebake the pie dough in the oven, with pie weights. Then after it’s golden brown, (either warm or cooled depending on the pie recipe) Add the custard or pumpkin pie filling… Then finish baking the pie.

Why Do You Need Pie Weights For Baking Pies?

When baking your pie dough it helps keep the dough in place to make the perfect pie crust.

HOW TO USE PIE WEIGHTS – The Best Pie Weights

These are my favorite pie weights and been noted as being the best pie weights you can use; Mrs. Anderson’s Pie Weights See how having pie weights can make a difference in making a pie crust.

How To Make A Perfect Pie Crust

Honestly, I think the best way to incorporate the butter is by using a pastry cutter and or food processor vs. by hand. It will get the butter into uniform pieces distributing it evenly in the dough you are preparing. But, you must not overwork the dough.

No matter what time of year you are making pies these videos will help you. How To Make Pie Dough and Crust These two videos are so informational and helpful for anyone who wants to master pie crust making and baking pie crusts. How To Make The Perfect Pie Crust.

If you are making the pie dough with the help of a food processor see the how-to and tips in this How To Make The Perfect Pie Crust video or skip to this point in time for just the tips at the video time (11:55).

You should not fully make pie dough come together in the food processor, you only incorporate the butter, water, and the addition of vinegar slightly, to get the dough ready to be kneaded on a wood board or other surface by hand.

Never overwork pie dough for any technique you use.
