In this post, I’m sharing the wide-mouth zipper pouch I made, plus a curated roundup of tutorials so you can sew your own.

What Is a Wide Mouth Zipper Pouch?

Wide mouth zipper pouches differ from standard zipper pouches because they open wider at the top, making it easier to access contents. They're great for makeup, diapers, travel, art supplies, and more, and are usually sewn with a slightly longer zipper and more fabric width.

Why Make a Wide Mouth Zipper Pouch?

Sometimes you need a bigger opening for wider things you want to carry with you or organize.

My Wide-Mouth Zipper Pouch Project

My second youngest daughter is the one who has started her family. She wanted to have her kids all close together, kind of how I did as a younger mom. Being from a larger family, she has some idea of what it's like and is learning daily about some of the challenges that come with it. I wish I were closer to support her when they need help. But, since I can't be there all the time, I can still help in other ways.

The last time I saw my daughter Krissy, she pulled out the small zipper pouch I had made her for quick grab-and-go outings. It was just big enough for a few essentials — a diaper and a small pack of wipes. But now that she has two little ones in diapers, that small pouch wasn’t quite cutting it anymore!

So I decided to make her a larger zippered diaper pouch using Anna’s wide mouth zipper pouch tutorial (I’ve linked to it below, along with the helpful zipper installation video). I made a few small adjustments to suit her needs. Instead of using a stiff interfacing or heavier lining, I chose a thinner lining fabric so the pouch would stay soft and flexible. When empty, she can fold it up and tuck it easily into her purse since this is meant to be a grab-and-go pouch, not a full diaper bag.

I’m really happy with how it turned out — especially since this was my first time trying Anna’s wide mouth zipper pouch pattern. Looking back, I probably should have stuffed it for the photos so you could see the shape better (instead of leaning against my jar of sewing scissors!). Next time I may choose a coordinating lining fabric, too — I love how Anna’s version looks polished inside and out.

Tips for Sewing Wide Mouth Pouches

  • How To Make Your Zipper Tabs Look Nice
  • Tip: If you’re brand new to zippers, practice installing one on a scrap pouch first. You only need a few stitches to get the hang of it.
  • Use clips instead of pins when working with bulky seams — they jump over fabric layers easily without shifting.
  • Both pins and clips are easily removed when sewing. Have something like a pin cushion to catch them or a little container or box for the clips.

FAQ: Wide Mouth Zipper Pouches

What fabric works best for wide mouth zipper pouches?

Soft-to-medium weight cottons (like quilting cotton) and home-decor weight fabrics work best.

  • Quilting cotton: Easy to sew, great prints.
  • Canvas/decorator fabric: Adds structure without extra interfacing.
  • Light weight denim or twill: Slightly heavier, stays upright nicely.

Tip: Add a lightweight fusible interfacing to the main panels for extra body — especially if your fabric is thin.

What tools do I need to sew a wide mouth zipper pouch?

✔ Sewing machine (straight + zigzag stitches).
✔ Zipper foot (highly recommended for zipper insertion).
✔ Rotary cutter + cutting mat + ruler.
✔ Fabric scissors.
✔ Pins or clips.
✔ Fusible interfacing (optional for structure).
✔ Iron + pressing surface.

Are wide mouth zipper pouches good for beginners?

Yes — especially if the zipper installation is explained well.
The main sewing steps are straight seams and a single zipper insertion, so:

✔ Beginner sewists can absolutely make them.
✔ Start with a printed pattern or clear video tutorial.
✔ Go slow with the zipper — that’s where most beginners feel cautious.

Tip: If you’re brand new to zippers, practice installing one on a scrap pouch first. You only need a few stitches to get the hang of it.
