What you will love about this cake recipe is that there are multiple layers with different colors. When you cut the cake you get a surprise!
Don’t you love surprise cakes? You can use one color jelly beans (pink) (blue) inside to make a gender reveal cake for a baby shower. Cut the cake and jelly beans will spill out.
How to make a Pinata Cake
First, make your cake
We cheated using a box mix but, of course, you can make your white cake from scratch.

Next add your cake food coloring to the individual layers prior to baking, with your theme colors.

Use a different bowl for each color layer.

Pour your cakes into prepared baking pans.

Follow the baking time on your cake recipe you choose to use. (box or scratch)

NOTE: Always watch the cake in the last 10 minutes of the bake time. Each oven, altitude and other conditions make the fully bake time slightly different.

Remove from oven when the cake comes clean with a toothpick.

Let the cake cool at least 10 minutes or slightly more prior to removing from the cake pans.

Use a cake food coloring kit;

For a unicorn cake, pick your colored cake layers, and candies add a unicorn cake topper.

For a gender reveal cake add one layer of pink or blue or if there are twins pink/blue or blue/blue or pink/pink… and your themed baby shower cake topper (boy) (girl) (woodland theme) (princess crown). You get the idea.

For a jellybean-cake use any colored cake layers and any colored jelly beans.

For the Pinata-cake use bright colored jelly beans and cake layers colors to match your party theme.

For a rainbow cake used many colored cake layers for your cake and rainbow-colored jelly beans or candies.

What do you do if your cake layers are uneven?
If your cake layers are uneven use

a serrated knife (if using a knife you might like this cake slicer tool to keep the layers even) OR

use a cake slicer (up to 10 inches) OR

adjustable cake slicer to even out layers prior to going on to the next steps.
How long before removing a cake before the pan?
10 minutes or try this cake removal hack if you are having trouble. Once your cake layers are baked. It’s time to cut and assemble the cake.
How to cut a circle out of a cake
Once the cake layers are cooled you are ready to cut and put together your Pinata Cake (or any of the other themed cakes).
Use a cake ring or circle cut out to create the cut. Remove the cut piece from the center and reserve for assembly in later steps. You can use a donut hole cutter or a circle cookie cutter for a smaller hole. Be sure to leave plenty of room for the cake edge.

Then, add the next layer with the hole cut out

Add your candy to the center of your cake
Fill the center of the cake with your jelly beans or candy.
Be sure to leave a little room at the top to add your cake circle cut out back in.
Top the cake, then begin frosting the cake until finished all the around and over the top. After the frosting, decorate the cake to match your celebration. (piping tools you may need frosting knife set)
