DIY Pencil Case
When my grandkids were here, I sewed pencil cases, cosmetic bags, and zipper pouches with them. I'm finally sharing our sewing projects.
I thought I'd share the finished projects and a few sewing tutorials, tips, and resources to help you make your own! Take advantage of spring break, summer break, sewing in the fall, and winter breaks to teach kids and teens sewing! Or use your downtime to learn to sew!
Why learn to sew?
No matter what age you are, sewing is a great skill to have! And a handicraft that opens the door to creativity!
Sewing allows for a high degree of creative expression. Sewists can choose fabrics, patterns, and embellishments to create unique and personalized items. This blending of skill and creativity firmly places sewing within the realm of craft.
Beginner Sewing Projects: Why We Love Projects Like This!
Whether you make this for yourself or help a new sewer, this sewing tutorial is perfect for beginners!
My granddaughters love the fabric zipper cases. They use them for pencil cases for school and little things. And my older granddaughter uses her pouches for makeup bags, holding personal care items, and cosmetic items.
They enjoyed helping make them. I gave them sewing tasks based on their skill level. Doing this sparks their interest in learning how to sew.
Below, I have a few resources and sewing classes that will help you, too! Do you need a sewing machine? Shop Brother sewing machines or other brands at great prices!

Tip: Ironing the fabric before starting projects like this is very important!
Ironing seams down, and ironing the project if boxing the corners is important. Reference the video to see how this is done. Do not use specialty fabrics, silky fabrics, or other hard-to-work-with fabrics if you are new to sewing. The best fabrics to use are cotton fabric, cotton canvas, or muslin. These will be the best fabrics for beginners.

How to Sew a Zipper Pouch Step by Step
Instructions

- It's important to Use Pre-Washed and Dried Fabric. Cut 4 pieces approximately 13″ x 22″ each.
Or make your preferred size. Just make sure you have zippers to accommodate the size. And allow for seam allowances… - Lay the right side fabric face down, and place the lining on top. Then iron back a seam (do this twice). Now, with the right side fabric face down on a table, pin (or hand baste) your zipper to each side in place. (zipper pull facing down to the table) NOTE: If you are using interfacing or iron-on interfacing, add it to the back of the outside zipper case fabric pieces before adding the inside fabric.
- When you flip it over, it should look like this image (image with steps). Then sew your zipper into place.
- Pull open the zipper slightly, fold the fabric in half right sides together, and pin and sew around all sides, meeting the zipper area that is already sewn. (This is why you need the zipper slightly open.) Now turn it inside out. Check sewing, clip edges, and the corners.
- To create a boxed bottom fold corner as shown, and pin.
- Check placement to make sure seams match.

Tips for Zipper Pouch Sewing
It is good to use fusible interfacing or lightweight heat-n-bond like this. Both products are iron-on, so adding them before sewing is easy! You can stabilize the light cotton fabric. You cut 2 pieces and iron each piece to the wrong side of the outside of the outer pouch fabric (this is the cut fabric you see on the finished project).

Sizing Variations
Once you understand the basic construction of a zipper pouch, you can easily adjust the size. Simply increase or decrease the width and height of your fabric pieces while matching the zipper length to the width measurement.
For a boxed or wide-mouth pouch, add depth by boxing the corners 1–2 inches, depending on how roomy you want the pouch.
Be sure to grab the printable measurement chart above for quick sizing reference.
🧵 Tip: How to Make an Unlined Zipper Pouch
If you prefer not to add lining, you can make a simple unlined zipper pouch by finishing your raw edges before assembling. Use a zigzag stitch, pinking shears, or a serger to prevent fraying.
For best results, choose a slightly heavier fabric like canvas, denim, or home décor cotton so the pouch holds its shape without lining. You can also press your seams open and topstitch along the zipper for a clean, professional finish.
Keep in mind that unlined pouches are softer and more flexible — perfect for grab-and-go storage but less structured than lined versions.
Common Zipper Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
- Sewing too close to the zipper teeth – This prevents smooth opening and closing. Use a zipper foot.
- Forgetting to open the zipper before final seam – Always open halfway before closing the pouch, or you won’t be able to turn it right side out.
- Using the wrong zipper length – Match zipper length to pouch width.
- Skipping interfacing when needed – Lightweight fabrics need structure.

When it comes to zippers, consider using ring zippers for added convenience or opt for traditional zippers. With these choices, you can design a makeup bag that truly reflects your “individual” taste.

Is a zipper pouch good for beginners?
Yes! A simple zipper pouch is a great beginner sewing project. It teaches basic skills like sewing straight seams and installing a zipper without complicated pattern pieces.

Cotton quilting fabric is ideal for beginners because it’s stable and easy to sew. For more structure, you can add fusible interfacing or use canvas or lightweight home décor fabric.
