Nickelodeon Gak & Floam Review

Theresa Huse 2012 DearCreativesdotcom-01023 using Gak blowing a bubble with it

Dear Creatives, I had the chance to receive the newly reformulated & better than ever Nickelodeon’s Floam & Gak products for Sammie to try out! I wanted to share with you about these products which are perfect for indoor or outdoor play, but let me introduce you to these products before I tell you more, along with sharing some photos of our playtime:

  • Gak is a stretchy, squishy compound
  • It is easy to use, clean up & store
  • Gak can be squeezed, squashed, stretched, twisted, rolled & yes even bubbled for hours of play
  • It comes with an air-tight container for staying fresh & reuse.
  • Gak is available in red, blue, yellow, green, pink & purple  (suggested retail price of $6.99)
  • You can check out Gak at :www.gak-is-back.com

  • Floam is a reusable molding compound to encourage creative expression. You can use it like clay, but it is little round textured balls that mold together. (you’ll have to see the pic’s to see what I mean.
  • You can mold, roll, fold, sculpt & more
  • It comes with an air-tight container for easy storage, clean up & reuse
  • & you have the option of letting the creation harden overnight to keep the work of art
  • Floam is available in red, blue, yellow, green pink & purple (suggested price of $6.99)
  • You can check out Floam at : www.floam.com

Our findings:

  • Both products have a recommended age of 6+
  • Keep out of the reach of Pets & small children
  • Gak and Floam are both non-toxic, phthalate, latex and BPA Free and better yet – won’t stain!

Sammie loved both products, but I think she enjoyed the Gak more. She took the Gak & rolled it into a ball, inserting a straw & blowing it into a bubble. It is stretchy, bounce-able, bubbly fun! We played with these on a overcast rainy day & it was perfect for her after-school activity. I can see Gak being the preferred gift for a birthday party from Sammie as she really enjoyed it & loves giving gifts she likes. I liked how you can store both products for reuse & take it out for another rainy day or even for fun outside at a table.

Floam:

I think using Floam on a kitchen or outdoor table top with a oilcloth table cover would be perfect. My table top is glass & I had an oilcloth, clean up was very easy!

{flowers, hearts, sea turtle, starfish, using the molds in lids, lots of play with Floam}

On a side note: I have to agree that the products are not for small children and to keep away from pets. Both products are washable & non toxic, but do have warnings to keep away from face, hair & eyes (to use running warm water if problem occurs to dissolve)

The products also have a caution to avoid prolonged contact with fabric & carpeting, but common sense would have you using Floam at a table & with Gak since the kids can take it around more maybe just let them know where they can play with it. Sammie is almost 10yr old & so I didn’t have any problems at all.

{Sammie said, hey look I made a bear paw with the lids. Lids have little shapes for press molding}

Honestly, either Gak or Floam would be  a super gift for girls & boys of the right age providing plenty of fun play & tactile exploration. Check out the links to see video’s of the products in action!

Have your kids tried Gak or Floam yet?

Disclosure: I was given this opportunity via www.childsplaypr.com being provided Gak & Floam samples at no cost from Nickelodeon to provide a fair & honest review of the newly reformulated products. I was not compensated monetarily. All opinions are my own (& not influenced in any way) I have shared my experience with these products while playing, watching & sharing the experience with Sammie while using the mentioned products.

Grilled Cheese Challenge Recipe – Mediterranean Grilled Cheese

Theresa Huse 2012 DearCreatives-01050 Grilled Cheese 650x 1

Dear Creatives, Did you know April has been National Grilled Cheese month? I was given the opportunity to try & create a new grilled cheese recipe using two products I love! How could I not try? Udi’s Gluten Free breads & Horizon Organic Cheese! So let me share what I came up with a Mediterranean Grilled Cheese. This is a super easy recipe I hope you get a chance to try it!

Now I did make the standard grilled cheese for an after school snack with Udi’s white bread & Horizon Colby Cheese, but for the contest I went with some of my favorite ingredients, artichoke hearts & green chili peppers…!

I decided to use the Millet-Chia Bread & Horizon Organic Colby Cheese (which Sammie loves for after-school snacks served with a sliced apple)

I used the Colby cheese which I chopped up.

Then I added diced green chilies mixing them with chopped artichoke hearts. Trust me here!

Now I am laying the foundation of the grilled cheese sandwich with these ingredients, but preparing the bread with butter is key! Using a non stick skillet with a low heat melt the butter (about 1 tbs) and add the bread!

You (newbie cooks) want to brown without burning the butter & bread! Flip over & brown other side lightly. Melt the Colby cheese slowly by using a covered lid on top of one slice. Take the other slice of browned bread out of the pan, spread with cream cheese along with the artichoke & diced green chilies ( about 1tbsp.)

Then top the bread with your melted Colby cheese slice. Completing your ultimate grilled cheese sandwich!

Optional ingredients would be adding chopped black olives or chopped Kalamata olives (my favorite) to cream cheese prior to spreading and topping the grilled cheese with sprouts! This is my Mediterranean Grilled Cheese. Enjoy!

Vegetable Recipes & Country Crock #veggieworld #spon

Theresa Huse 2012 DearCreatives zucchini boats

This post is sponsored by Country Crock. I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls Collective, and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

Dear Creatives, Some of you know I am taking time with Sammie to visit her older siblings & niece who live out of town. One thing I enjoy doing is cooking a healthy meal for everyone. I like trying new recipes that entice the younger crowd to try new veggies! I have come across  two resources that I am using on my trip that I thought I would share them with you, along with my recipe trial.

The Resources:

  1. Clare Cerespo Cookbook where I decided to try one of the recipes to share with you! Clare Cerespo Cookbook is full of fun, whimsical, step-by-step recipes that young families are sure to love, along with others. The recipes are quick, easy & fun to serve. My three favorites are; Beautiful Butterflies page 27, Zucchini Boats page 37 & Cabbage Leaf Presents page 57 & I could go on so cute campfire veggie recipe….
  2. The second resource I have to share is on Country Crock where they have recipes, the Country Crock Chronicles where you can browse articles, along with products & where to buy. I loved browsing their recipes finding some new ones for our family (like this cinnamon roasted sweet potato recipe). The Country Crock Chronicle is an excellent resource for quick, simple tips & recipes to help make serving veggies fun. With Country Crock kids just think veggies are delicious!
  • The recipe I decided to try was the zucchini boats from Clare Cerespo Cookbook.
  • It was super easy to follow.
  • Here are some photos from my trial run & at the end of post where to get your free recipe book!
First I precooked slightly to enable me to carve out the middle of the zucchini.
Then I scooped out the middles. You can see I scored them a little to have it go quickly. If you do this try not to get near the outside skin. You want your boat intact. No sinkers here! lol
Now in a non stick skillet I just sauteed the veggies including the cut out middles with 2 tablespoons of Country Crock. In another pot I made my brown rice.
Then I mixed them together per recipe directions & filled the boats.
I had a whole ship yard of zucchini boats!
The taste test!
Kid approved! Seriously, I refrained from sharing her eating mouthfuls at a time! No need to hide veggies with Country Crock around! The recipe was super simple to follow & delicious! I could of just ate the sauteed veggies alone with the brown rice it tasted so good sauteed with Country Crock. I found a sweet potato recipe at Country Crock maybe I can get her to like my favorite potato next!
Additional Info:

Besides being delicious here are some facts

  • Country Crock is a good choice.
  • 70% less saturated fat and 30% fewer calories than butter
  • 0g trans fat
  • RD approved
  • Recommended in 2010 Dietary Guidelines
  • 8 out of 10 kids think veggies with Country Crock are delicious

Thrifty #KmartEaster Shopping

Theresa Huse 2012 DearCreatives.com-00444

Dear Creatives, You’ve found me creating a Easter basket for my two favorite little girls! One thing I love about Easter is the celebration of life, renewal & of course spring! I don’t believe you have to spend a fortune to create an Easter basket fit for giving. As a matter of fact if you use a little planning like I did you will find great deals with Shop Your Way Rewards program, the Kmart circular &

{Click image to enlarge}

You can sign up online for Shop Your Way Rewards I circled the spots where the rewards sign up & store located are online  Seriously so easy to use the online ad just like the Kmart circular to see what is on sale! & sign up is free of course!

{Click all images to enlarge}

Did you know you can even order items & have a gofer run around & you can pick up your items at the store the same day? Now that is convenience!

Now lets see what I found at my one-stop-shop for Easter:

This was just the beginning! On the shop I ended up saving $28.64 & getting a $5.00 card to use another time with my Shop Your Way Rewards program!!

To see all the shop photos visit my Google+ Album!

Now here are the pretty baskets I assembled for Sammie & Audrey! This one isn’t wrapped with cellophane yet, but will be. I won’t be able to have the handle up as it has to be mailed. I wanted to share the goodies with you that I found to go into the basket before packing it all up.

Here’ s another view. A cute movie of the ballet of Beatrix Potter I found in a $5. bin; since Audrey takes dance, the characters are all in costumes & I thought she might enjoy it past Easter, along with bunny ears, bubbles, duckies & treats!

Here is Sammie’s wrapped up with cellophane to look pretty & keep her out of the candy early! lol ( all it takes is one roll of cellophane per med-large size basket at $1.49 ) & pretty ribbon to tie a bow with!

She has goodies in the basket such as robins nest eggs, peeps, a plush stuffed bunny & a figurine. To see all the items in the basket close up in the shop visit the Google+ Album

Now I am off to put the finishing touches on Audrey’s & mail it to her! I think the girls will be thrilled with their Easter baskets! & what I am thrilled with was the savings! Each basket was about $15.oo ea.  + I purchased $20. of other needed items while there which enabled me to receive the $5.oo reward card! I can say that my Kmart store is super clean, organized, along with friendly staff which made my experience even better.

Have you shopped Kmart lately? What is your favorite Easter candy?

The Silent Thief Movie Review

DSC_0036

Dear Creatives, I was invited to watch the movie The Silent Thief & review it. The Silent Thief played at the Omaha Film Festival in March & is being presented this April at the Palm Beach International Film Festival, along with the Roma Independent Film Festival.{details at end of post} This movie isn’t going to be for the family, as it is a psychological thriller.

It begins with a young adult grifter who is constantly taking photographs. He finds an ad for a room rental & takes the whole page & goes to meet the family who is renting the room. They are quite trusting & don’t check on his background. At first impressions they like him & take him as a renter.

Brennen {the grifter} works his way into the family dynamic one by one, all the while something seems quite off about him. The father isn’t too sure about Brennen, it was the mother who wanted to take in a renter. When the son comes home from college & it brings out something in Brennen. You never are quite sure what to expect from Brennen. The movie has some very adult themes intertwined throughout. The ending is not expected & I don’t want to spoil it for those who view it. This movie draws out the tension with a push & pull, just enough to have you watching & wanting to see what will happen.

Typically I don’t watch psychological thrillers, but thought given the chance it is good to view something out of my comfort zone. This movie keeps you on edge with enough story to ease the tension creating its own ebb & flow. Two of the actors I have enjoyed in the past are in the film are Frances Fisher and Kurt Fuller. The younger cast members were Toby Hemingway, Cody Longo, Josh Pence & Scout Taylor-Compton. To see the full cast line up visit here IMbd  Official Website & clip The Silent Thief.

Director: Jennifer Clary (debut feature film)

Blogging & Blogging Introduction to Just Jenni Style

Photography by Claire & Sam Make-up & hair Jenni Huse

Dear Creatives, A little honesty here….Do you ever have times when everything you have almost ready to post just isn’t quite right for the day? Where you had a week you just wanted to sweep under the rug? I gave myself a time out yesterday having had a migraine. I took some medicine, helped the kiddo with some homework & laid on the sofa. Little did I know that I would fall asleep, be fixing her dinner at 7pm then tucking her in & cleaning up just to jump into bed again. (the Mr. at band practice after work) A whole afternoon ca-putz! No finishing blog posts, editing photographs no being prepared for today. I have used up my pre-written posts from having the flu zip through my house. Enough said!

I wanted to share pretty with you! I also wanted to share crafty with you! I wanted to create something new this week other than my digital scrapbook pages for my giveaway. (which by the way is easy to enter & in the previous post) But, alas it is what it is! Its nice to pretend that we are invincible at times when it comes to life & blogging. Then there are times when we aren’t & we can’t push ourselves any further. Our bodies along with mind says slow down or I am stopping you dead in your tracks! You should of listened! I think as women, mom’s & bloggers that is just what we do push ourselves! Have you ever encountered any blogging hiccups?

So today although late with my blogging post, I will just share a few things I had been working on that are coming up along with an introduction!

  • A movie post

  • An award post
  • & of course Feature Friday tomorrow (there is still time to submit if you like to! Link -up)

Of course I am not leaving you without some inspiration to breath in! & the  introduction…..

Fashion Star Review

Dear Creatives, I love being part of #CouchCritics it allows me to occasionally do reviews of movies, books, along with television shows which is actually fun for me. I love being in the know, seeing what is most current, along with seeing what might be entertaining or educational & maybe even a combination of the two.

I must admit I was super excited to be chosen to review Fashion Star. Fashion Star premiered yesterday 3-13 & is aired on NBC with 14 Eager designers 1 Winner to be chosen at the end!  So let me tell you a little more about Fashion Star just in case you missed it!

Fashion Star Group Photo

About the show: The contestants are competing for the opportunity to create the next big fashion brand. The end collection of the winner will be at all three stores H & M, Macy’s & Sak’s the collection valued purchase is worth $6 Million. Of course one of the first things you think to yourself is this another Project Runway? Don’t get me wrong I am not going to compare, but here is how it differs; Less backroom time at least with the premiere. Each contestant had to come up with 3 Signature pieces of clothes that showcased their style. Then by two’s, the designers showcased clothes came down the runway with the models wearing them. A total of 3 outfits per designer. The designers then came in front of the buyers {H& M, Macy’s & Sak’s} The buyers then either gave them a purchase price or no offer, any designer with no offer then was in jeopardy of going home at the end of the show. In the end the buyers picked who would go home, explaining why.

I am in awe of the talented designers. I always enjoy seeing back room scenes of the design process, along with getting to know the personalities of the contestants. Which does end up in some situations leading to letting someone go as in last night. No one likes someone who is cocky & doesn’t take feedback for growth automatically getting defensive. Right? How could you work with someone like that when you are going to collaborate a potential end collection.

What is super about this fashion show is you can actually purchase items from the winners from the stores that bid on their collection & it’s available the next day after the show! So fashionistas if you are ready to shop, trendy new fashions another reason to watch the show.

What I could do without was the rock concert lingerie fashion show to introduce Elle Macpherson, but it was their premiere. Another thing is 90 minutes for me is a bit long. I know toss in the commercials, they did cut a few designers being showcased while very briefly giving an overview of their outcome or it could of ran to 2 hours. I am not sure if it will stay at 90 minutes or not for future shows. And although I did mention length I could of used seeing more back room time with the designers. All in all I thought the show flowed well despite the length. I enjoyed the cast of hosts & buyers, along with getting to know the designers just a bit from the first show & of course loved seeing their designs!!

The Hosts & Mentors:

Jessica Simpson

John Varvatos

Nicole Richie

Elle Macpherson

I also had to go behind the scenes & get a look at what drives these designers individual style. You might find it interesting to take a look when your done here to see the 14 designers each totally different & unique Fashion Star video interviews. Of course its neat to see a sneak peak, but I also think that from watching the show you will really get to learn more about them. I watched quite a few interviews & here is Sarah Parrott ‘s interview. What I like about her is she seems so personable.  I love seeing people going for their dreams & getting closer to them.

My favorite designers so far are Sarah Parrot, Orley Shani, Lizzie Parker & Nikki Poulos. I can’t wait to get a feel for the other designers work. On a scale of 1-5, where 1 is the worst and 5 is the best For Fashion Star I am giving it “Couch Rating” of 4.

Now if you want to find out all there is to know about Fashion Star & even see some videos from last nights show you can visit NBC’sFashionStar

While your there don’t forget to sign up & earn points with their featured challenges! I got my Fashion Star Badge!

“Friends With Kids” Watch The Trailer -The Perfect Date Night Movie

Friends With Kids

Dear Creatives, Do you ever have a week where you just need to unwind & get a good laugh in? Just escape into a movie? That is the kind of week I have been having, but March 9th Release Date can’t come soon enough! That is when one of the latest movies on my list to see is coming out. I need a little humor & this movie Friends With Kids is it! No I didn’t see Bridesmaids, yet that is & some of that cast is in Friends With Kids. I love the casting of this movie & think you will too. I have a clip to share with you, so I hope you watch it & enjoy it as much as I did.

Here is an overview, just in case you would like to know what your in for;  Friends With Kids is a daring and poignant ensemble comedy about a close-knit circle of friends at that moment in life when children arrive and everything changes. The last two singles in the group observe the effect that kids have had on their friends’ relationships and wonder if there’s a better way.  They decide to have a kid together – and date other people. There are big laughs and unexpected emotional truths as this unconventional ‘experiment’ leads everyone in the group to question the nature of friendship, family and, finally, true love.

 Rated R 1hr 40min long Drama, Comedy

Jennifer Westfeldt wrote, directed, and stars in the romantic comedy Friends with Kids. She plays Julie, a Manhattanite whose biological clock is about to run out, so she convinces her longtime platonic best friend, Jason (Adam Scott) to father a child with her. They seem to have a much easier time juggling the responsibilities of new parenthood without the complication of being in a relationship with each other, which is in contrast to the two couples they are closest to. As their friends’ marriages implode, Julie and Jason’s happy equilibrium topples over as well when he falls for a hot young artist (Megan Fox) and she begins dating a successful businessman (Edward Burns).

  • Friends With Kids stars Adam Scott (“Parks and Recreation”), Jennifer Westfeldt, Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Chris O’Dowd, Megan Fox and Edward Burns.
  • Written & directed by Jennifer Westfeldt (Kissing Jessica Stein).

“Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life” Movie Review

Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life

Dear Creatives, I had the chance to preview the movie Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life that is being released on DVD, on demand and in digital on March 6th! The movie is based on the beloved children’s novel by Wendy Mass, Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life is a family-friendly adventure film starring Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino and Emmy Award winner Joe Pantoliano.

In the movie, 12-yr old Jeremy Fink receives a mysterious wooden box with the words “The Meaning of Life-for Jeremy Fink to open on his 13th birthday.” The box has four locks, but the keys are lost. In order to find out what secrets are in the box Jeremy must find a special key to unlock it. Jeremy along with his best friend Lizzy go in search of keys by way of clues & ideas.

Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life

They search through Manhattan for the keys. Their adventure taking them from fleas markets, shops, a science museum & more, all the while meeting an assortment of characters who are quirky & interesting. Each encounter brings them closer to finding out just what’s in the box. Ultimately they find the greatest secret!

Flea Market in Manhattan

One of my favorite parts of the movie is Jeremy where takes an hour an evening before bed to reflect on his day, he calls it the HOJ. How wise for just turning 13!  His friend Lizzy is a bit quirky, the same age as Jeremy & they have something in common that has created a bond between them for life, besides being neighbors since early childhood they have both lost a parent in different ways & also have a strong bond since they have  no other siblings.  Both Sammie & I love the ending when he discovers the meaning of life, but we can’t tell you that part!

Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life

Sammie also enjoyed the science museum scene, along with the rides around town as some of her favorite scenes & as I mentioned the ending which we can’t share. The movie is not fast paced, no huge action scenes, tricks to catch your attention…but the story flows nicely along with humor both fitting for the young & adults. I think this is probably why it received a PG rating along with some touching, but not deep “life topics.”

The run time is 88 minutes. We enjoyed watching this DVD after school one day, popcorn in hand. The DVD is loaded with special features, including cast interviews, deleted scenes, bloopers, a limited edition o-card with glitter spotting, and a downloadable audio reading by the author Wendy Mass of the book’s first chapter.

If you have a preteen I think they would enjoy the story, especially if they have read the book which would give them some insights also to the story line, but if they haven’t read it the story is easy to follow through their trials & escapades that bring them to the answers. Some of the scenes will remind you of how awkward it can be to go through that time of life.
