This is a simple coffee dessert recipe that can be made for New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day, birthdays… or anytime you have an occasion that calls for something a little indulgent. Based on the traditional Italian Tiramisu recipe, but with a twist by adding affogato.

In Italian affogato means drowning. Typically those recipes use ice cream drowned in espresso. Put the two together and you have one deliciously decadent dessert, Tiramisu Affogato. Today I’ll show you how to make it and share my version of this coffee dessert.

There are four easy steps to making this coffee. Brewing extra strong coffee, soaking loaf cake or ladyfingers, assembling the dessert, and pouring the coffee over the ingredients. The results are a tasty coffee dessert!

Steps for preparing the coffee for this dessert

First, brew a pot of coffee. If you don’t have a French Press you will want to Double brew a small amount of coffee 2 cups with the  2-1 ratio but, do it prior to making your pot of coffee and set to the side. Then, make a pot of coffee. But, you won’t need the whole pot. The amounts for the recipe will vary depending on how many dessert cups or glasses you make. You can have a cup of coffee while your working. It’s one of the perks!

Next, I used a small french press to double brew strong coffee. Ratio two times coffee to amount of water/cup size. You want it strong!

Important: If you don’t have a french press just double brew a small amount of coffee 2 cups with the same  2-1 ratio but, do it prior to making your pot of coffee and set to the side. Next, take the double brewed coffee and for each dessert cup measure one tablespoon coffee and one tablespoon Kahlua (if adding the alcohol). I just add mine to a glass, then stirred the amount I want in the glass. You don’t want that much it’s just for added flavor.

How to layer the coffee dessert

The soaking of the loaf cake or ladyfingers and whipping the heavy cream

Tiramisu Affagato Steps_#shop

  1. Grab your chilled heavy whipping cream.
  2. Measure 1 cup and whip until you have stiff peaks, add 1 tablespoon confectioners sugar, and 1 teaspoon vanilla mix in.
  3. Take 1 cup of your whip cream mixture and add it to a new bowl.
  4. Next, add 1 cup of Marscarpone Cheese to the whipping cream.
  5. Mix together. If it seems too stiff add more of your whipping cream, but you want it a little firm.
  6. Now Cut your loaves into four.
  7. Fill a dessert dish with them and pour a tablespoon of the double brew coffee mixture and Kahlua. Let it soak in.

Before the next steps, you will make chocolate shavings, from your semi-sweet or dark chocolate bar.

Set up all your needed items nearby. To transfer your soaked cakes or ladyfingers into a pretty glass for serving.

At this point, if you want to get fancy you can transfer your soaked cakes into a pretty glass or just follow these same instructions for any of your dessert cups.

  1. Add two small scoops vanilla ice cream and one scoop of whip cream mixture.
  2. Next, pour your regular brewed coffee into a glass (if not tempered be sure to put a metal spoon in the side where you’ll be pouring, make sure coffee isn’t hot)
  3. For the size martini glass I used here I used 1/4 cup of coffee.
  4. Next, sprinkle the cocoa powder onto dessert.
  5. Add a piece of the chocolate if you have extra and your chocolate shavings/curls to the top.

The martini glasses were larger so I used two pieces of the quartered and soaked vanilla loaf cake.

It’s easy to make several in advance. But, serve as soon as you make them. Although, you can add them to the fridge prior to pouring coffee ontop! Then pour the coffee before serving.

  1. Soak quarter pieces, add whipping mixture wrap until ready to finish, storing in your fridge.
  2. Then when close to serving your dessert use the same process above adding the ice cream, coffee, and final shavings to right before you are serving them.

    1. Hi Rebecca, Thanks for dropping by. I hope you try it sometime. You can make an espresso shot with the coffee and use that if you have an espresso machine. It would be just about the right amount, perfect for this Affogato recipe. That would be tasty too!
