Today I’m sharing a DIY summer chalkboard calendar project. Honestly, I haven’t had much time for hand-lettering lately, but this summer I plan on doing more of it with Sammie. Since she loves drawing daily, it’s the perfect way for us to hang out indoors on a hot day! This project is actually one of my favorite Chalkboard Art Ideas for staying organized while adding a touch of decor to the kitchen.

This project is a great way to kick off the season; it’s an easy craft idea that took under 30 minutes to complete. You don’t need many supplies for this simple schedule—just a chalkboard surface, a damp rag, and some high-quality chalk pens. I personally love using Chalk Ink Pens because they are perfect for writing on different surfaces (I even used them for professional menu boards, where I worked in the past!). Now I just use them for fun on surfaces like chalkboard, glass, plastic, and metal. Let me share how easy it is to do it. Don't worry if your writing isn't perfect. You can take a wet towel and erase it, then write it again. Or even use carbon transfer paper and a template or stencil. I linked to a tutorial for that, below.

The other thing is, even if you're rusty with your writing/hand-lettering skills, it's practicing that will make you better. I haven't practiced in a long time. I popped this project out in about 15 minutes. Another thing is you can erase your chalkboard at any time with a damp cloth and create anything you want! All summer long, I plan on updating this board.

How to Draw a Simple Monday-Friday Schedule

Although this simple calendar was made for the summer. It can be made for back-to-school, seasons, holidays, or task-oriented use.

In this calendar, I used all the days of the week. Or you can just use Monday-Friday.

  1. Plan the design. Keep it simple as you like!
  2. Add seasonal elements in one or two colors and let it dry completely.
  3. Next, at the top of the chalkboard, add the title of your calendar. Mine was Today's Summer Plans. Note: if you have a square chalkboard, your writing will be straight. This is a curved chalkboard, so the writing was curved at the top.
  4. Use a ruler, holding it for a straight line, or mark it with transfer paper, or visually place the Monday-Friday. Write each day of the week with chalkpens. (I did it visually; perfection is not needed)
  5. Then, add the activity for that day of the week. These can be changed weekly. Or as needed.

  • Know your writing drawing plan. Don't want to freehand? Print your design and transfer it (video tutorial) to your board, then use the chalk pens. Mine is freehand.
  • I planned in my mind. You can draw up a sketch on a piece of paper first if you like!
  • Unwrap your new pen. Leave the cap on and shake it to get the ink flowing to the pen tip! Pro Tip: I press it on a paper towel to make sure it's fully loaded and/or not going to leave a big blot.
  • Start lettering and drawing.
  • Make a mistake? Use a slightly damp towel edge to wipe clean or fix. Let the erased area dry before writing again. Pro Tip: You could also use a Qtip (or damp Qtip) for detailed fixes.
  • You can create signs for weddings, menus, party boards, kids' daily schedule… Or even make a summer plans board as I did!
I have a dry-erase board, and you could use the chalk pens on it, too.

What can chalk pens do?

Here are a few more details about what chalk pens can do

  • There are various tips on the wet wipe pens. (4 types) My favorite is the chisel style.
  • 30 color choices!
  • They work on any non-porous surface
  • They come in 2, 4, and 8 packs
  • Note: Always shake the marker with the tip on! Trust me! It loads the ink into the tip. Press on a test surface or paper towel first.
  • Creates without dust
  • You can check them out on ChalkInk
  • Another favorite of ours is these chalk pen sets and chalkboard art supplies by Chalkola.

You can see our [Trick or Treat board using them here].

    1. Hi Lauren, Thanks! They do have a large variety of choices & are nice colors.

  1. The chalk ink is genius!!! Can I find them at any craft store??

    1. Hi Sara, No not always. But, I would think most do carry them especially if you live near a city. I got mine on Amazon and or directly from their website. That’s where I have found the most choices for this brand.
