Easy DIY Lip Balm
This homemade chap stick is great for moisturizing, and healing. Perfect for anytime of year you need to care for your lips.
This is an easy small batch recipe, which is what you want when filling tubes. You want to be able to get your melted mixture into the tubes prior to it cooling. You can use lip balm container tubes, or round containers. It’s totally up to you.
How to make Lip Balm
• 1 tablespoon cocoa butter
• 1/2 tablespoon shea butter
• 1/2 tablespoon coconut oil
• 1 tablespoon beeswax (cosmetic grade)
• 1 stick cinnamon, crushed (cinnamon sticks food grade) *omit if using essential oils
• Small mesh strainer
• Lip chap tubes
• Small heat proof food grade funnel (this one goes up to 250 degrees Celsius)
Optional items: Essential Oils: ArtNaturals essential oils are ones we have used in our beauty DIY projects. They come in basic sets to larger sets. I have heard good things about these essential oils, their winter set would be perfect for the holidays (and includes cinnamon) Or if you want something more girly, there is this sweet scented set.
If using the essential oils only use a drop or 2 at most, and mix with your coconut oil. Essential oils are highly concentrated. See our DIY beauty page for tips if you are just getting started. It includes other resources for making your own homemade natural cosmetics.
Directions for making DIY Lip Balm
In a heat safe jar, add the first four ingredients.
- cocoa butter
- shae butter
- coconut oil
- beeswax
Place the cinnamon stick in a plastic bag and crush with a hammer. You don’t want it to be powder, just small broken pieces.
Add the cinnamon to the jar.
Heat a small pot of water until a rolling boil (about two inches of water). Add the jar into the water.
Let the jar sit in the water while the ingredients melt fully. Once melted, whisk. Leave the jar in the hot water for 15-20 minutes so that the cinnamon can infuse.
In the meantime, set up your lip chap containers. (if you prefer you can grab clear lip balm tubes)
When ready, remove the jar from the water and strain the mixture through a mesh strainer to remove the cinnamon.
Using a small funnel pour the mixture into the tubes until full. If just getting started with lip balm making you might light this lip balm kit with filling tray (stand), pouring pitcher, and more. Or grab this filling stand- wax pouring tray, with scraper to make filling batches easier.
You’ll need to move very quickly as the mixture begins to harden immediately.
Let sit on the counter for twenty four hours to set.
Makes 5-6 lip chaps depending on size of tubes.
This beauty recipe is great for gifts or for making for yourself or your family.
