Ingredients
Sometimes I pick easy, convenient ways to make things. Cookies like this are great for the last minute and when you don’t have time to measure out things and bake from scratch.
But, if you have time make any of our homemade cookie recipes and frost them! Either way, you will end up with cute decorated cookies for Halloween! Or for other occasions, swap out the frosting colors, sprinkles, and icing decorations.
- Cookie Mixes– Pumpkin Cookie Mix, Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix, Sugar Cookie Mix
I used Pumpkin Cookie Mix but, if you have little kids pick a different mix they will enjoy.
(Or you can make homemade cookies and frost them. – Cookie recipes. Or these pumpkin oatmeal cookies.) - Frosting – Midnight Black (Midnight black cookie icing You will need powdered sugar to make this one) (purple funfetti frosting)
The midnight black funfetti is seasonal so I linked to midnight black buttercream frosting (without sprinkles included). - Halloween Sprinkles or like these Halloween sprinkles
- Cute Ghosts Edible Sugar Toppers (ghost party 2D party icing decorations)
You will also need butter, 1 egg, and water. Find other Halloween baking supplies here. If making homemade cookies add the ingredients to your list.
Directions
Make the cookies according to the package instructions (or recipe directions). Let the cookies cool completely before decorating!
- Melt the butter, crack the eggs, add water, and mix it with the dry ingredients from the package.
- Bake at 350 degrees until the cookies are slightly brown around the edges of the cookies.
- Let the cookies cool completely.
- Next, decorate the cookies in one of the easy ways shown below!

How To Easily Frost Cookies
- Take half the frosting and put it in a microwaveable bowl. Then microwave the frosting in the bowl for about 10-20 seconds (at 50% temp) and stir. Repeat if needed. You want a slightly melty consistency. It will look like melted chocolate.
- Dip the cookies face down into the melted chocolate. After coating the cookie on one side place it onto parchment paper or a cooling rack.
NOTE: (Place the cookie down with the chocolate on top and the undipped cookie on the bottom.) - Add sprinkles to the top of the cookies, while the chocolate is warm and melty.
- Repeat for each cookie you want to decorate.
If needed you can reheat the frosting if you are doing more cookies.
Easy Way To Decorate Cookies
How To Frost Cookies
- With a butter knife take the frosting and frost the top of the cookies.
Note: (Do this without melting the frosting) And use a swirl motion. - Add a cute icing decoration to the top of the frosted cookie (In this case we used cute ghosts for Halloween cookies). For other seasons pick up seasonal cookie decorations.
- Slightly press the cookie decoration into the frosting.
- Repeat the process for each cookie you want to decorate until they are all decorated.
For both sets of cookies, let the frosting harden. If you are in a hurry add them to a baking tray or other tray covered loosely with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Put them into the refrigerator until the frosting has set/chilled.
Simple Buttercream For Cookies
If you would like to make your cookie frosting from scratch watch this video for simple buttercream frosting for cutout cookies (this frosting will harden).
I also saw a store-bought frosting hack where when you beat it with a hand mixer for 3 minutes or until it doubles in size it will make it fluffy! I haven’t tried it but it might be perfect for cookies or cupcakes.
When the cookies are chilled and the frosting is hardened
Take them out of the refrigerator before serving or package them for gifting (keep them cool until they are given to the recipient). I used these cute Wilton Ghost Resealable Gift Bags.
Make it special and serve these yummy cookies with these cute Halloween mugs – ghost mugs, cat mugs, and pumpkin with little ghost mug to filled with your favorite milk, chocolate milk, or pumpkin drink! Wouldn’t these make a fun after-school treat for the kids or a weekend sweet treat for the family?!
