We recently had the chance to escape the summer heat with a little back road travel trip. The town we headed out to is south west of us, a small town called Cayucos. Living in California allows plenty of fun travel opportunities. Each town is unique in history, scenery and things to do.

Cayucos happens to be a small town I’ve visited for the beaches and hadn’t really explored fully. On our visit out to this coastal beach town we decided to spend the day. We had quite fun exploring all the town had to offer.

Cayucos is located in San Luis Obispo County on Highway 1 between the cities of Morro Bay and Cambria California to the North. You can access it easily from both the north/south directions if traveling nearby.

Things To Do In California

Cayucos, California

Our first stop was to pick up her friend in Cayucos, who was visiting her grandparents. She now lives in Hawaii. We planned to pick her up and grab a late lunch prior to exploring. We headed to a local spot known for it’s great sea food.

The restaurant is called Schooners. I hadn’t eaten there before. We had lunch pricing but, it was $$ and they had a kids menu $. Sammie’s black bean quesadillas looked really great and she enjoyed them. Sammie’s friend got chicken strips and enjoyed them. I got fish and chips. Although my fish was great, the battered outside, fried fish was greasier than I had ever gotten elsewhere. Which was disappointing. The fries were great. If I ate their again I personally would try something else. The service was good and it wasn’t a long wait for our food. A long time ago we ate at Duckie’s Chowder House and they were good too. It’s more of a indoor outdoor café and smaller.

Schooners is a super fun place to go though. If you eat inside it’s decorated with lots of things to see. If you eat outside on the upper deck you have views of the beach. I heard there is usually a wait. Get on the list, leaving your cell number they will call you when your table is ready. In the meantime you can walk around a bit before your wait time. Outside are fun carved fishing statues, things to see and coastal shopping.

We walked around taking photos and the girls had fun letting me take photos with these pirates and sailors.

On the side of the surf shop there is a mural with a bit of the history. If your not familiar with the area it used to be inhabited by the Chumash Indians. Cayucos history. There is Captain Cass’s warehouse still standing from 1883 at the landing. If you are interested in surfing there is plenty of beach space at Cayucos pier, beaches and nearby beaches. Locally in Cayucos you can rent gear, wet suits, take surf lessons. There are two surf companies in Cayucos. Good Clean Fun and Cayucos Surf Company, they both offer lessons and gear.

The original pier has been rebuilt. We walked all of it. It’s an easy walk for anyone. Any opportunity to search for Pokémon? Yes, they found plenty of unique Pokémon in the Pokémon Go game while walking the pier. They did stop playing and take photos, watch surfers and enjoy the walk too. It was an overcast day but, filled with warm spots of sun shining through the clouds casting some great hues into the skyline.

Tomorrow I’ll share more of our day in Cayucos and what other things we did and you can if you visit the area! I will also share some beach photography.

Have you done any traveling lately?
