When I created my jelly bean cake for my spring photo shoot I knew I had to circle back with how to create easy cake recipes. This is a two color jelly bean cake. For this jelly bean cake DIY I used a white cake mix as the base but, you can use any white cake recipe you like, and still get the same results. This is a super easy way to create a pretty jelly beans cake. Of course, you could make one completely from scratch. But, we didn’t have time, so we started with a boxed cake mix. Below, we have a video tutorial to show you the steps, and other recipes from scratch if you need them.

The steps for jelly bean cake are really easy. Make the white cake mix. After it’s completely mixed you put the white cake mix into two prepared cake pans. I sprayed nonstick spray then, lined the bottom of mine with parchment paper.

Next, you take yellow food coloring (or any other color you’d like) and add about 5 drops to get one color in one pan. In the other pan, I used 1/8 cup lime jello. (you could use green food coloring if you like) You can see the steps of how I created mine, and view the video at the end of this post to show you how to make one with additional layers.

One day I hope to update the images for this post. But, I promise this is an easy way to make a jelly beans cake, and tasty to eat.

Easy Baking Recipe Steps

How to Make a Jelly Bean Cake

I tossed in a handful of jelly beans into each cake batter to bake them inside the batter. This is just one of the jelly bean cake ideas that came to me on a whim. (this is optional it does give the bites a different flavor from each jelly bean and they do melt) Next, you bake the cakes per the recipe cake directions.

Cool the cakes, then turn out each of the cakes onto a lined surface. Use parchment or as in my case, I used Flexible Cutting Boards.

  • Next cut a circle out of one of the jelly beans cakes, I used a sharp small serrated knife (in the video they used a shape cutter)
  • Place the cake with no cut-out center onto a cake plate
  • Next Frost the cake that doesn’t have a cut circle out of it
  • Place the cake with the cut out center circle onto the frosted first layer (leaving the circle cut off)

  • Next place the jelly beans in the center
  • Then place the circle on top of the  of the jelly bean
  • Now finish frosting the entire cake

We used marshmallow frosting but, you can get a cleaner look with a buttercream frosting

Now if you want to make the cake with more layers you can. I found the video I’m sharing after I made my cake. It has more layers and shared from Real Simple. Although, they didn’t color the cake layers I thought it would be helpful for you to see the process of how to cut, stack the jelly bean cake.

Mine only had two cake layers, and one of them is cut. Anyway, if you want a fun way to enjoy a celebration try recipes with jelly beans. I think you’ll enjoy making one from the easy baking recipe tutorial. Additionally, you can decorate the outside more elaborate by adding flowers, jelly beans, peeps or other candies.
