I have recycled quite a few Capri Sun Pouches & although I made some snack pouches it wasn’t until I had a conversation with my little granddaughter (4 yr old) who called me that I had a light bulb moment! To create a crown from some of the Capri Sun Pouches we had recycled. These crowns would be perfect for dress up, kids parties, imaginative play or even a costume. The best part it is all easy straight sewing and your recycling by re-purposing the Capri Sun Pouches.

Our conversation went something like this; Hi grandma. Hi Audrey, oh how I have missed you! I missed you too & love you. I love you too Audrey. Then Audrey say’s can I talk to Sammie? Sure, but before we go I will send you some mail soon since its been awhile since I sent you some. I would like that! “Can you send me a crown?”, Audrey says. Don’t you have one already? I say. She says yes, I have two. I say, ” Hmm….Oh, I have an idea, let me see & check your mail soon.” Then she goes off to talk to Sammie. So that was my light bulb moment that  I had which involved making a crown with some of those Capri Sun Pouches.

I knew I didn’t want to buy another crown for her, although a princess can never have too many! Right? I had the recycled pouches laying around needing new life & that was the crowning moment!

Honestly I wasn’t quite sure if it would work, but it turns out if you cut a triangle from the pouch from each corner to the center point (not separating front from back). Then sew zig zag up the outside two edges to in-force the strength. All you have to do is then take about 8-10 of them and sew them across the bottom overlapping together to make the crown. I used Sammie as a model “head size” since my daughter didn’t have a measuring tape in the moment to tell me Audrey’s head size. Then I used Velcro & sewed it in place in two spots so it can be adjusted to fit. It is the perfect stiffness & sits perfectly. Now if you wanted you could get some scrap-booking jewels or misc. for decorating. Don’t worry when the crown sits on the head you don’t even see the inside.

Of course every crown needs jewels & I again only wanted to use what I had on hand. So I found my glitzy ribbon & lovely Martha Stewart Glitter, plus Elmer’s White glue & a crown was born! Ok, not just one but three so far. As I thought my niece & nephew would like one too. Sammie has me making her something else, but I am sure she’ll love one for her dress up / drama box. Maybe I’ll set up the video camera & add a video to show you how easy it is. So stay tuned for that!

Any how, I love being a “young” lol grandma because I have the best of both worlds, finishing raising my own daughter & having my grand kids, who are pretty little & so much fun too! Now these crowns would be perfect for any prince or princess. A great & easy to make Halloween crown, fitting for a royal costume or even as party hats for a themed party! Plus, you get to re-purpose something saving you $ along with being nice to the earth! Oh, by the way you can use Krylon gloss sealer to spray the glitter so it doesn’t sprinkle off everywhere.( spray according to directions in a well ventilated area or outdoors & let dry completely) Never let small children who might put these in their mouth have the crowns to play or wear without full supervision! Keep out of their reach when not in use.

What has your kids or grand kids said to you that inspired you to make something for them?

Need a crown that maybe a little more chic,  princess or maybe even for a wedding ? Lace? Flowers? Cloth?

  2. Wow! I love this! I particularly love the new use of the Capri Sun pouches- I’ve seen them used to make wallets and things- but this is right up my alley for preschool crafts! I also like that it has so many easy ways to decorate it- and Martha Stewart Glitter is ALWAYS my way to go 🙂

This is a fun crown I posted about- the only drawback is that you can’t adjust the size. 🙁
