Fashion Star Review

Dear Creatives, I love being part of #CouchCritics it allows me to occasionally do reviews of movies, books, along with television shows which is actually fun for me. I love being in the know, seeing what is most current, along with seeing what might be entertaining or educational & maybe even a combination of the two.

I must admit I was super excited to be chosen to review Fashion Star. Fashion Star premiered yesterday 3-13 & is aired on NBC with 14 Eager designers 1 Winner to be chosen at the end!  So let me tell you a little more about Fashion Star just in case you missed it!

Fashion Star Group Photo

About the show: The contestants are competing for the opportunity to create the next big fashion brand. The end collection of the winner will be at all three stores H & M, Macy’s & Sak’s the collection valued purchase is worth $6 Million. Of course one of the first things you think to yourself is this another Project Runway? Don’t get me wrong I am not going to compare, but here is how it differs; Less backroom time at least with the premiere. Each contestant had to come up with 3 Signature pieces of clothes that showcased their style. Then by two’s, the designers showcased clothes came down the runway with the models wearing them. A total of 3 outfits per designer. The designers then came in front of the buyers {H& M, Macy’s & Sak’s} The buyers then either gave them a purchase price or no offer, any designer with no offer then was in jeopardy of going home at the end of the show. In the end the buyers picked who would go home, explaining why.

I am in awe of the talented designers. I always enjoy seeing back room scenes of the design process, along with getting to know the personalities of the contestants. Which does end up in some situations leading to letting someone go as in last night. No one likes someone who is cocky & doesn’t take feedback for growth automatically getting defensive. Right? How could you work with someone like that when you are going to collaborate a potential end collection.

What is super about this fashion show is you can actually purchase items from the winners from the stores that bid on their collection & it’s available the next day after the show! So fashionistas if you are ready to shop, trendy new fashions another reason to watch the show.

What I could do without was the rock concert lingerie fashion show to introduce Elle Macpherson, but it was their premiere. Another thing is 90 minutes for me is a bit long. I know toss in the commercials, they did cut a few designers being showcased while very briefly giving an overview of their outcome or it could of ran to 2 hours. I am not sure if it will stay at 90 minutes or not for future shows. And although I did mention length I could of used seeing more back room time with the designers. All in all I thought the show flowed well despite the length. I enjoyed the cast of hosts & buyers, along with getting to know the designers just a bit from the first show & of course loved seeing their designs!!

The Hosts & Mentors:

Jessica Simpson

John Varvatos

Nicole Richie

Elle Macpherson

I also had to go behind the scenes & get a look at what drives these designers individual style. You might find it interesting to take a look when your done here to see the 14 designers each totally different & unique Fashion Star video interviews. Of course its neat to see a sneak peak, but I also think that from watching the show you will really get to learn more about them. I watched quite a few interviews & here is Sarah Parrott ‘s interview. What I like about her is she seems so personable.  I love seeing people going for their dreams & getting closer to them.

My favorite designers so far are Sarah Parrot, Orley Shani, Lizzie Parker & Nikki Poulos. I can’t wait to get a feel for the other designers work. On a scale of 1-5, where 1 is the worst and 5 is the best For Fashion Star I am giving it “Couch Rating” of 4.

Fashion & Sewing Trends

Dear Creatives, Oh yes designers work hard whether it be for fashion, crafts, styling or decor all influencing each other & inspiring us.

100layercake via Pinterest

I would love to be more of a sewing  fashonista. These designers & stylists above are creating for weddings you can see this Q & A from last May at 100LayerCake if you like. I have helped style a few weddings, but am falling in love with fashion sewing with crafty or unique twists. I have my sewing machine revved up & I am ready to go! Of course I am inspired by simplicity and ease when it comes to me creating it & more inspired by Couture when dreaming of where my sewing could go. I am touching on both today.

Emersonmade via Pinterest

When it comes to fashion styling, crafting something unique is always fun. How about these yellow flower elements on this  polka dot dress? Spot on! Not to mention the hand crafted leather belt & matching clutch.

Emmersonmade

You know I love the tunics & this one with it’s simple tie on belt is another spin I can add to the pattern I just had sewn by shortening the sleeves. {pattern link & post below in related posts} A great top for looking good while crafting or shopping for crafts. I can see putting a broach or flower, even lacing the neckline all the way down to neckline where it matches at the V.  Also while creating this in a smaller print or no print similar to above. Maybe even widening the belt & adding a vintage broach for a clasp.

Pinterest

Now if I was only in my 20′s {sigh} I would be sewing this super cute skirt! I love the crafty edge this has to it along with the center tie. Is this something you would wear?

Pinterest

Now you don’t have to be a designer to create some crafty fashion for spring. I might not be young enough to pull something like this off, but I am sure to sew something up for my daughter like this, by just taking some lace or pom poms you have a whole new look to something  you or your daughter might have been tired of.

Now if you want to keep your sewing or even fashion styling trendy & up to date. Checking out Vogue Scrapbooks they are an inspiring way to see what is up & coming in trends along with colors.{note bow tie above -free scout inspired bow tie tutorial listed in related post links below}If this is the first time visiting please take note I am smitten with illustration & fashion illustration. Every so often I share who is catching my eye.

Vogue.it

Right now this sewing of a ruffle neckline caught my eye! Milano Fashion Week 2012-2013. Now I know I may not wear half the things I see, but I love seeing all things pretty!  If it inspires me I love it! Fashion directly & indirectly inspires crafters with color, line, pattern, shape & more. Just look at scrapbook papers among other things.

What are you inspired to sew for yourself? Where do you find your fashion or craft inspiration?  Or do you just prefer to shop for fashion?

Polyvore Fashion Sets & Site

Dear Creatives, I was busy working on a website the past few days. Almost to the point of being on the computer too much. Do you ever feel like you hit the wall? I promised myself today that I will be not working on the computer all day. I haven’t had time to many things on my checklist, not to mention Sammie has a short day due to parent conferences. I recently rediscovered Polyvore.com.

No, I hadn’t forgot about Polyvore, its just been awhile. It is rather fun if you have limited time as you can save your drafts & go back to work on things. If you like fashion, graphics & putting things together then you probably will love this site. Have you ever visited or made things there? There are even contests to enter with your fashion plates.

Polyvore

I decided to share a few sets I created today to show those who haven’t ever been to the site. This was for 9 West Shoes & screams spring! Florals, florals, florals.

Polyvore

There is a lot of talent over there & many pretty sets to look at. This is a set I did for the launch of Mad Men which is coming March 25th.I only watched it a few times. I know this show was pretty popular. Do you watch Mad Men?

Polyvore

This set was just for fun. I added the sunglasses as I was looking through them trying to figure out what brand & style I wanted since I broke my good ones! I wouldn’t buy the ones on the set for myself, but did like them.

Polyvore

If you are on Polyvore be sure & add me. I don’t hang out there a lot, but would love to look at your sets. You can leave me your screen name in comments too if you like.

Polyvore

Now I had to leave you with this set can you guess why? If you like fashion, art & design then you will enjoy Polyvore. I go by Msartist on Polyvore. I never cared about following or being followed, but I did find out if you have 30 followers you can create a group, which might be fun to have a DearCreatives group there. So add me if you are there & I will try to make at least 1-2 sets a week. I have been enjoying a little creative time & inspiration there lately.

Have you ever made sets on Polyvore? Whats your favorite spring fashion pick?

Red Carpet Oscar Moments

Dear Creatives, I hope you had an enjoyable weekend. If you are like me & enjoy movies maybe you watched the Oscars last night.

I did, although part of the time I must admit I had to do a little cooking & ready the kiddo for the week ahead. I didn’t realize how many movies Jessica Chastain has been in, starting before 2006. Jessica has also done theater. She is quite the chameleon. Jessica looked stunning! Jessica was definitely my pick for favorite gown along with Red Carpet Moment, wearing a hand-embroidered black-and-gold designer gown from Alexander McQueen.

She had been up for best supporting actress for her work in The Help.

Here is Jessica & Octavia in The Help. I enjoyed both their performances.

Octavia Spencer her co actor in The Help won best supporting actress. Like any awards show there are happy & disappointing moments. Viola Davis didn’t win for the Best Actress, which was disappointing if you were rooting for this movie & all the actors in it. Although, I am sure those that won deserved it! I hadn’t seen all the movies nominated. All in all I enjoyed my evening.

The Helps Emma Stone Oscar carpet moment in a Giambattista Valli gown. I enjoyed her hosting, she was a kick. I thought she was stunning in this red gown. There were so many beautiful dresses. If you missed them you can see them right here on The Hollywood Reporters Oscars 2012. I love fashion & movies so this was a perfect awards show to watch for those reasons not to mention finding more about movies I missed that would be worth seeing along with escaping into the Hollywood world.

What were your favorite fashion moments on the Red Carpet? Who were your favorite picks?

Don’t forget to enter the movie giveaway before you go!
