Real Simple

I have enough room on my counter for a lovely vanity tray, perfect for those vintage perfume bottles my mom had collected. I promise to share the remodel we do. I have been pinning ideas for the Mr. He doesn’t want any more inspiration, all he is thinking of is cost & not wanting to move where the plumbing goes. {sigh} I understand, really! But, I just can’t help myself!  I just want something simple, pretty & easy to care for. Luckily when I saw this pin it was just for those final touches that make something uniquely yours & pretty. It doesn’t involve plumbing & isn’t expensive.

Drawer knobs, a piece of wood & you have a lovely spot for hanging ties, belts, necklaces…. I’ll be hunting for drawer knobs at yard sales. I love the vintage glass ones, but I will have to have a mix of other as our home is very modern. I can see this going in the bathroom or maybe even the bedroom.

I want to make a pretty rolling cart like this! Handy, re-purposed vintage table for organizing crafty, creative goodness! Love, love, love these projects. Re-Purpose, Diy Weekend Ideas & Feature Friday

Dear Creatives, Happy Friday to you! Today is all about re-purpose. How many times do you hold something in your hands & wonder how would you re-use or recycle it? Hopefully quite often as our planet needs us to be more using of the things we have. This spring when it warms up a bit I have a few projects to tackle & share with you, but today I have other peoples diy, re-purpose inspiration to share with you, along with my Feature Friday Link-up! So if you have anything to inspire us with please add it in to the linky. Here are a few things that have me inspired to re-think items this weekend when spring cleaning into a re-purpose item (s). Then onto the Feature Friday.

Curbly

This simple project took a safety hazard & turned it into a win, win. You can see the how to & before photos at Curbly A simple re-purpose of a drawer with some paint from the garage & extra, safe & handy storage. Who doesn’t love the cute touch of the mustache framed?

Betz White

This is a tutorial for re-purposing jeans into crafty storage. Raise your hand if you have a pair of jeans you or the Mr. don’t use anymore! I thought so, you will love this easy how to & perfect for spring organizing. Don’t you just love the fabrics Betz used with the jeans. You can see her guest post on Craftzine. Our Big Earth

This is something I would love to do to have on my window sill in the kitchen. It gets really hot here in the summer. Between the air conditioner if needed & heat indoor plants don’t do well. This would be the perfect solution to creating an environment plants can survive in along with recycling. To view the how to visit Our Big Earth. DIY Vintage Case With Fabric {tutorial}

Re- Purposed Case Click to enlarge

Dear Creatives, I have always wanted to diy / re-purpose a case, train case or suit case. I actually have medium size suit case to do, but have not wanted to take on the task as I never had tried covering any suticase with fabrics & papers before. Never say never because you can! Let me share some tips with you that I found helpful when recovering mine. Yes, I finally dove in & re-purposed a vintage cd case that was calling for a new life. I wanted to start small, saving the suitcase for later. Here are some photos from the process along with a tutorial & tips so you can make this yourself too when you find your perfect case or suitcase.

Inside of CD Case

Here is what it looked like before in the inside. It was a vintage cd case (you know the cassettes that were prior to tapes prior to cds, ya vintage!) I found it at a thrift store for $3.00, had fabric left over from a project…Any way, it called for new life inside & out. I really wanted to redo this case as I am going to be teaching Sammie to sew some more, what a great gift to give her to keep some of her sewing goodies.

In need of repair

Here is what it looked like on the outside.

Re-Purpose { click to enlarge }

Here are a few photos of the process & some tips for you if you decide to tackle a case or suit case.

Tips:

  • Make sure you wipe case clean inside & out, then let it dry
  • Pull off any peeling vinyl or coverings
  • Have all of your supplies ready & by you *(supply list later in post)
  • Have a clean wet towel & dry towel handy
  • Measure twice, cut once
  • Write measurements down if you need
  • Pre Iron fabric (I had it already washed & dried)
  • Have iron hot & ready for pressing edges of fabric ( for details around closures & handles )
  • Work on a surface by a sink if possible *lifesaver

Inside of re-purposed case

Work on the inside last. It is the easiest part. But I did take out the plastic cd inserts with an exact o knife prior to beginning the project! I used these cute Valentines scrapbook papers I had & cut out the small squares for some extra bling on the inside back which I left red.

Completed Re-purposed Case

More Images Below of it completed

Sorry I can’t you the exact amount of fabric needed ( at least 1 yard? ), but I decided to use fabric to cover the entire outside. Here is a little tutorial about this part.

Tutorial:

  • Work on one area at a time
  • Cover sides & bottom first ( ensure your sides fabric stretches flatly over part of the bottom) Glue with modge podge
  • When you get ready cover the bottom measure the exact measurements but add enough to fold over and iron seams (edges) to those exact measurements!
  • Now iron measured fabric to ensure you fold & iron to the exact bottom measurements
  • Go to the case & double check fit of bottom adjust as needed then glue down. Make sure to flatten edges well & use plenty of glue let dry a bit
  • Repeat process for the top but allow for a little fabric from the sides to go upwards gluing flat against the top. (the final top layer will cover it)
  • To create handle area drape fabric over top and cut a slit that will allow handle to slip through * be careful not to cut too wide
  • Then lay it over the top covering while measuring entire top plus a little extra for folding & ironing to exact measurements
  • Fold & iron then place material back onto top with newly ironed seam edges &  if looks correct glue down or adjust as needed & glue down
  • When gluing around any metal closures or handle use a flat thin object to slip fabric tucked under or into needed areas ! Now the closure that shuts the case you will have to make sure to leave open or cut where they meet so it can actually close.
  • Remember go slow, use plenty of glue & flatten down surfaces as much as possible!
  • Make sure to smooth out all air bumps

I had one corner that has a little bump but all in all not bad for the first time. I put some vintage supplies of my grandmas & some items for her in the right side, then as she accumulates more items I’ll hopefully have another case done to store my grandma’s treasures. Here is a list of supplies for doing it yourself.

Supplies used:

  • exact o knife
  • scissors
  • ruler
  • measuring tape
  • iron & board
  • mod podge
  • scrapbook paper from 2 12×12 pieces
  • fabric * amount varies on size of project or you can use scraps & make it quilt like (allow for miss cuts or use rule measure twice, cut once!)
  • wet towel
  • dry towel
  • sink & soap

You do a lot of going back & forth for measuring fabric, ironing down edges then gluing.  So working by a sink is best for washing & drying hands prior to measuring fabric, then ironing. Work on a covered surface area  picnic oil table cloth?… or in my case I have a glass table that wipes clean easily. I used the wet (damp) towel to wipe glue from handles & closures as I went along.  Dry towel for that also. Oh, you can seal it with varnish or a spray. I have yet to do that.

Anything that was a showing edge I ironed seams flat & clean prior to gluing. If you have a question or two, just ask I will be happy to answer! It is easier than it sounds, but it is time consuming. I did it in an afternoon about 3 hours if I remember right. If you have younger kids this might be a project to do when you have someone to help with them.

Now if you find one in better shape like this one you can just add some cute details & put your stash in pretty quickly! My finds needed quite a bit of help. Can’t wait until spring to check out some yard sales! I’d love to cover one like this! Sew Cute!

3 Ways To Repurpose Holiday Ornaments

Hello Dear Creatives! My name is Addison and I am honored to be contributing a post for you while our lovely host is enjoying some time off for the holidays.

Every year I sort through my Christmas decor and weed some things out. It might be some old fraying garland, or perhaps a few ornaments that are falling apart. I’m a big fan of only keeping the things you love, especially if there is a story/memory attached. I’m also passionate about re-purposing things to give them a new life around the house. So this year, while digging through my holiday goodies, I found these simple wood ornaments I purchased a while back. I had planned to decorate a ‘natural’, rustic tree one year.

Snowflake Magnets/Pins

The simple design has a tendency to disappear on the tree so I never used them, which is a shame because they’re really delicate and pretty.

Snowflake Magnets/Pins

Snowflake Magnets/Pins

After much thought, I came up with a few ways to give them new life. These options also work great as fun little gifts for friends and coworkers.

Option 1: Magnets

DIY Snowflake Magnets

The magnets were very quick and simple to make. If you already have the ornaments, paint, and hot glue then the only cost would be the magnets which you can buy at a craft store. The package I bought was $6 for 50 magnets, on sale for 40% off, making them only about $4. Your new ornament magnets would cost mere pennies each.

Step 1: Collect your supplies.

  • Ornaments
  • Craft or Spray Paint (optional – you could always go au natural)
  • Hot Glue
  • Magnets
  • Other decorations, such as glitter (optional)

Step 2: Remove hangers and paint the ornaments

There are a lot of options when it comes to holiday colors these days, so let your imagination go wild.

You can go with a simple white. These were spray painted with Satin White.

Snowflake Magnets/Pins

Or even break out the all purpose Oil Rubbed Bronze Spray Paint.

Snowflake Magnets/Pins

Step 3: Attach the Magnet

Use hot glue to attach the magnet.

Snowflake Magnets/Pins

Snowflake Magnets/Pins

Tip: Paint the glue side of the magnet the same color as your ornament. That way the magnet will essentially disappear after being attached.

Snowflake Magnets/Pins

Step 4: Decorate

So the simple painted ornament is too simple for you? That’s okay, break out the glitter!

You can paint them traditional Christmas colors…

Snowflake Magnets/Pins

cover them with your homemade mod podge

Snowflake Magnets/Pins

and make them sparkle!

Don’t forget all the other color options too…

Option 2: Push Pins

So not everyone wants a fridge full of snowflakes…I get it. Another options would be to use them on your bulletin board!

DIY Snowflake Push Pin

These were just as simple as the magnets. Using hot glue, attach a thumb tack to the back of the ornament.

DIY Snowflake Push Pins

Paint and decorate them any way you want.

Option 3: Gift Tags

Don’t underestimate the power of a homemade gift tag these days.

These wood snowflakes would make great gift tags and the recipient can use the snowflake as an ornament on their tree. Or attach a ornament magnet as the gift tag so they can use it on their fridge.

DIY Snowflake Gift Tag

Tip: The gift tag option is a great time to pull our your chalkboard paint, so you can write the recipients name.

Even though I used a wood snowflake in this tutorial, you don’t need to be limited to flat wood ornaments. You can glue small magnets to almost any light ornament; including small globe ornaments and even bells!

Good Luck with your crafting and Happy Holidays!

Cheers,

Addison

DIY Holiday Frame

End Result

Dear Creatives, I decided to share a frame that I re-purposed & changed into something for holiday decor. I hope you can find a frame & create a little holiday sparkle for yourself or even for a gift. This project is really easy & inexpensive but, the end results will be dazzling!

End Result

This is the end result a glittered  frame with a holiday image! I have a photo collage that shows the before & after with how to which is so easy!

How to:

  • If you find a glass frame you can add thin fabric or paper to the inside.
  • On the outside of the frame I used Elmer’s Glue-all (with a little bit of water, as it is thicker) & a paintbrush onto carefully where you will glitter
  • Use a wet q tip or cloth & finger with dish soap to wipe any excess smudges off glass
  • Apply glitter (I used Martha Stewart smoky quartz ) *do this over a tray to catch excess
  • Let dry
  • Lay-down back cover or measure size you’ll be cutting out with holiday paper ( Shop Holiday Gift Wrap at Paper Source)
  • Once glitter is dry, shake off excess into a tray
  • Now you are ready to insert picture into frame  (if frame is tight you don’t need tape if not you can tape into place so it doesn’t slip down) & your done!
  • PS. I just took Styrofoam cone shapes & glittered them since the glitter was out (with Martha Stewarts Verdelite & Kunzite ) I am hoping to find some candle sticks to pop under them! I’ll show you when I do.

Witch Costume DIY

Dear Creatives, I have been doing a little digging these past few days as Sammie wants to be a witch. Some of the best Halloween costumes are homemade. When we were at the thrift store we found a black velvet dress. I thought it would be perfect to transform into a witches dress.  So I dug around, found a few things to show her & I thought I would share them with you. PS.When the costume is done I promise I will share it with you.

Delia Creates

Halloween Hat-ettes Tutorials

This is a cute witch hat that I found via Delia Creates. She has a tutorial for this witchy hat-ette & not only for this one, but for a 1900 inspired flower hat in felt and also a pumpkin topper! I have been in love with hats for a long time, but these are super cute! I can’t wait to see if Sammie wants to top off her costume with this! & be a pretty witch!

Saffron Fields on Etsy

I need to find her a black pair of velvet shoes & add a clip on like these here! Or maybe I will end up making clips of velvet & adding them to her shiny black shoes? (& save some money) Hm mm, light bulb moment!

Candace Lane on Etsy

I am thinking of taking this design & sewing a cape-let, then adding a hood to the cape-let, just to add some witch flair to her costume. I will be trying to use all recycled materials so we’ll see what I end up doing.

ByStringTheory on Etsy

Nails a green or dark with sparkles! Which can be easily done the day before.

Now we did face makeup last year for a Vampire. So I am sure Sammie will want makeup. I don’t think she wants a green witch. I came across this witch tutorial & she isn’t scary. I will probably have to put a light foundation on her skin as she is olive complexion. I also found this scary one, but I don’t know that I would be up for this one on a school night Halloween but I thought it has cool results. Snow white evil queen witch tutorial. Maybe I will do something with the pics from last year so you can see how to create a vampire type face.  & share with you in case you have a vampire to do. She had so much fun last year!

Re-Purpose With White

DearCreatives.com

Dear Creatives, I wanted to share a re-purpose I found & transformed from a purchase at a yard sale. Nothing over the top, just simple wipe clean, sand & repeat then spray-paint.  I choose the color white. It adds such a clean look to something. Although I don’t like white for walls in my home, I prefer warmer colors I wanted to also share some white inspiration that got me excited to use white in my project & has me rethinking white in my home.

apartment therapy

I would love to find a some vintage dresser to paint white that looked like this! Love it! Don’t you?

Pinterest

Now this is going to have me looking for all kinds of shapes & sizes of frames to re-purpose and paint white! & maybe having me rethink white on a wall or two?

Pinterest

Now this re-purpose from 4 men & 1 lady that I found from Pinterest is a great example of taking a $3.99 statue and changing its look to something modern! I will have my eye out for funky statues now too!

Now onto my before & after:

A little rusty tool box, some elbow grease & white spray-paint transformed into a sleek white toolbox.

Venassa is a card-maker, crafter and want to be photographer who is about to be a new mom!  She has a personal blog The Best Days and a new craft blog which is called VB Creations.

Now meet Karima from Karima’s Crafts  She is always crafting and sewing and entered a re-purposed diaper storage box you can see it right here.  This is an up-cycled project from a ladies top! She has several posts on sewing & crafts and some tutorials too. You can see them all on her blog where she shares what she has created.
